Take a holiday on the edge of an Ice Age moraine. That is possible in Altenwalde. The ridge of geology on which this district lies is called "Hohe Lieth" and is indeed the foothills of an ice-age terminal moraine. This is what makes the landscape here so varied: fertile fields, flowering heath and a beautiful coastal forest that gave the place its name.
If a pure beach holiday isn't enough for you, you'll find a lot to do in the Cuxhaven Coastal Heaths the most beautiful hiking, riding- and Cycle paths .
Cross the Altenwalder Heide to the Altenwalder Forst. Here, northwest of Altenwalde, on the Altenwalder Heights lie the earthen ramparts of an old castle complex. It dates back to Charlemagne in the 8th century, who built it to secure his northernmost imperial territory and subsequently served as protection against the Vikings in the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries.
Nature lovers, hikers and cyclists will find a beautiful holiday home here. The coastal heaths, where Heck cattle, wild horses and bison have settled, are well worth seeing. Well-signposted paths make a hike or cycle tour through the coastal heath a nature experience. Viewing platforms and information boards give an insight into nature and provide information about this unique coastal landscape.
On an excursion to the surrounding area, you should take a look at the districts of Gudendorf and Franzenburg and also pay a visit to the Altenwald Cross Church. In Altenwalde you can find inexpensive accommodation in hotels, holiday flats and with private landlords. Tennis fans can play on a well-maintained clay court in Altenwalde.
