Baden

The Sahlenburg, Duhnen and Döse beach sections have a particularly child-friendly water depth, so that the little ones can splash around in the cool water to their heart's content. In Grimmershörn and Altenbruch you can swim under supervision in buoy bathing areas from June to September, from one hour before high tide to one hour after. Another bathing area is designated in Berensch-Arensch on the natural beach.
Info: Beaches

Bathing water quality

In Cuxhaven, continuous samples are taken at "Altenbruch" lido, "Grimmershörnbucht", Döse lido, Duhnen - near "Haus der Kurverwaltung" and Restaurant Leuchtfeuer - and in the district of Sahlenburg in the wading car and car park areas.

The results of the samples have been bacteriologically flawless for years or have not been objectionable from a bacteriological point of view. More details on the individual bathing sites can be found under this link .

Preventive health protection for all bathers has top priority in Cuxhaven. If the limit values, which are binding for all member states of the European Union, were to be exceeded, an immediate bathing ban would be issued in the corresponding area of our North Sea spa or the beach section would be closed. However, this is not the case. Should there be any changes in this regard, north sea spa Cuxhaven GmbH will inform you immediately.

Barrier-free

The beaches and the beach promenade from Kugelbake to Duhnen are accessible barrier-free in many places. This also applies to Altenbrucher Strand and many tourist facilities and sanitary facilities.
You can find more information in the brochure"Enjoy your vacation. Barrier-free".

Tree house Cuxhaven

The tree house is equipped with a double bed and a loft bed, cooking facilities, a sitting area
and a bio toilet. A terrace offers an unobstructed view of nature, and the mudflat Sea can be seen in the background.

Beach sports/family beach

The Sparkassen-BeachArena, the only permanent beach stadium on the North Sea coast, has become one of Germany's best-known beach sports centers with its tournaments in June, July and August. During the summer vacations, beach volleyball and beach soccer training and tournaments are offered for guests. Sports events for families are also held here.

Visit to the farm

Visit to a typical Lower Saxon farm with livestock and grain cultivation, followed by a cosy coffee table with a chat in the barn and a visit to a small private museum of local history.

Cuxhaven Coastal Heaths

The North Sea spa town of Cuxhaven has more to offer than just beach and mudflats:
the Cuxhaven coastal heaths stretch from Duhnen to Oxstedt and are a nature experience away from mudflats and beaches. Large areas of this beautiful landscape with its valuable flora and fauna are nature reserves of international importance.
The sandy Geest reaches directly to the mudflat Sea between the districts of Berensch and Duhnen and forms a steep break-off edge known as the "Geestkliff", up to 6 metres high. Behind it, close to the coast, hides a mosaic of extensive heaths, rough grasslands, small heather moors and oak-crested forests.
Grazing animals help to maintain the heaths by pushing back scrub encroachment. In the Altenwalder Heide in the area of the former military training area, this is done by Heck cattle, wild horses and bison in large paddocks. Other heathland areas are grazed by sheep and goats.
A signposted network of paths with information boards, observation platforms and nature trails leads through the diverse Cuxhaven coastal heathland landscape.

Dikes

Large parts of the city of Cuxhaven are below sea level, so dikes have to protect people's lives. Please pay attention to the protection regulations. Cycling on the dike is only allowed in a few sections that are specially signposted.
Further information is available from the Cuxhaven Dike Association.

Digital guest card

Simple, future-oriented handling of the guest card (formerly spa card) - that is the primary goal of the new digital guest card in the city of Cuxhaven. From now on, Cuxhaven guests can conveniently download the proof of the paid spa tax onto their smartphone before arrival. With this innovation, the North Sea spa of Cuxhaven is laying the foundation for further digitalisation measures.

For sustainable tourism:
Holidaymakers in Cuxhaven can now manage their guest cards digitally - a printout is no longer mandatory. This additional offer is not only a benefit for environmental reasons, but is also intended to make guests' holidays as pleasant as possible.

Since the end of September 2021, the municipality has been offering accommodation providers the option of providing their guests with the guest card digitally on their smartphone by e-mail - as a PDF file and wallet file. By saving the guest card on the smartphone, it is always available and there is no need to keep the paper card. Those who do not wish to use the digital guest card can continue to use the familiar paper card without restriction.

By showing the guest card, holidaymakers receive, for example, free access to the beaches and reduced admission to the swimming pools. As part of a mutual recognition of guest cards, visitors also have the opportunity to visit many beaches and tourist facilities throughout Cuxland free of charge or at reduced rates.

Landlords who decide to activate the new function offer their guests a convenient and simple option for dealing with the guest card. With the advance of digitalisation in the tourism sector, the North Sea spa Cuxhaven would like to position itself as a holiday destination that is even more fit for the future.

Kite flying

From November to February, stunt kite flying is permitted on all beaches, except on both sides of the tidal flat ramps. From March to October, stunt kite flying is only permitted on the designated beach section at the Kugelbake for safety reasons. Children's kites on a string are permitted everywhere, except on both sides of the tidal flat approaches.

Duhn Artists' Promenade Festival

The Duhn Artists' Promenade Festival presents at least 7 artists and performers on 5 stages. Over four days, the promenade becomes a stage for artists, jugglers and mimes.
Visit the place of artistry with trapeze and vertical cloth artistry, and immerse yourself in a very special atmosphere.
In addition to the delicacies on the stages, there are numerous specialities from the pans and pots of international cuisine to discover in the gourmet stands.
Furthermore, designers and artisans will tempt you with all kinds of beautiful and unusual things.

The tombola organised by the Verkehrsverein Duhnen im Nordseeheilbad Cuxhaven e.V. on the occasion of the Duhnen Artists' Promenade Festival attracts visitors with numerous prizes in the form of accommodation, shopping and value vouchers and many great material prizes with a total value of over € 30,000.

Classification

All establishments marked with stars in our holiday magazine have been classified according to uniform criteria that apply nationwide. The hotels and guesthouses (10 and more beds) were rated by a panel of experts from the Hotel and Restaurant Association. The private room providers (up to a maximum of 9 beds), holiday flats and holiday homes were assessed by licensed and trained examiners from the German Tourism Association and awarded the corresponding stars. The classification is reviewed every three years by an independent inspection commission. If you would like your accommodation to be of a certain standard, you will find the classification guidelines in our holiday magazine. You should then book one of the classified properties.

Climbing Park Cuxhaven

In Sahlenburg, directly on the beach next to the Surf-Point, there is a challenge with excitement and action in free nature. The Cuxhaven Climbing Park with a total of 7 courses through the Wernerwald offers the whole family a lot of fun with a view of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

More information on the Cuxhaven Climbing Park.

Coastal Heaths

A nature experience away from mudflats and beaches in a beautiful landscape with its valuable flora and fauna offers unique recreation in a nature reserve of international importance. Here, between the districts of Berensch and Duhnen, the sandy Geest reaches directly to the Wadden Sea and forms a more or less steep, up to 6 m high break-off edge called "Geestkliff". Behind it, close to the coast, a mosaic of extensive heaths, rough grasslands, small heather moors and oak ridge forests extends. Here also live Heck cattle, wild horses and bison in large paddocks. A signposted network of paths with information boards, observation platforms and nature trails lead through the diverse Cuxhaven coastal heath landscape.

Kugelbake

The Kugelbake is the landmark of the city of Cuxhaven. The 29-meter-high sea marker once served as an orientation aid for sailors. Due to modern radar piloting, it has lost its actual meaning today. For the emigrants who set out from Cuxhaven for America, the Kugelbake was "the last corner before America".

Kugelbake Hall, Fort Kugelbake and spa park

In the Kugelbake-Halle there are national and international stage events like concerts, operas, musicals, ballet, theater or shows. Open-air events take place in the spa gardens, such as the day of the shanty choirs, light festivals or, during the Christmas season, the "Cuxhaven Winter Magic" with its own artificial ice rink. Meet where others go on vacation: The design possibilities of the Kugelbake Hall create ideal conditions for the most diverse events, conferences with accompanying exhibition or congresses.

The spa park with its well-kept green spaces not only invites you to take a walk, but is also worth a visit with its adventure playground, a small zoo with a penguin pool and the beautiful bird aviaries. Fun for young and old is a pedal boat ride with our "swans" across the small lake in the summer months.

The amount of the contribution depends on the season and contribution zones. Day guests pay their fee when accessing the beach at the guest services of the north sea spa Cuxhaven GmbH. The guest contribution is a financial contribution for the construction, maintenance and operation of tourism facilities and services for our guests, e.g. the restoration of the beaches after the storm season, the tidal flat rescue service and the operation of the tourist baths as well as the organisation of guest events. Every euro of your guest contribution thus benefits you again. By the way: your guest card is also valid in the other towns in Cuxland. Lower Saxony mudflat Sea National Park

A landscape that is completely washed over by water twice a day and then completely dries up again is something very special in the world. The mudflat Sea, which covers about 10,000 square kilometres, is one of the largest wetlands on earth and a globally unique natural landscape with a fascinating animal and plant world. In 2009, the World Heritage Committee designated the mudflat Sea a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. On guided mudflat walks, excursions by the UNESCO mudflat Sea World Heritage Visitor Centre or on a horse-drawn carriage ride across the seabed at low tide, you can experience nature in all its glory. In any case, a visit to the island of Neuwerk off the mudflat Sea is worthwhile.

UNESCO mudflat Sea World Heritage Visitor Centre

Here, visitors young and old can learn everything worth knowing about the mudflat Sea. The varied exhibition and excursions into the mudflats, salt marsh and heath provide insights into this unique natural landscape. The visitor centre is located directly on Sahlenburg beach. In addition to the very informative exhibition with three seawater aquariums, numerous display boards, a floodable tidal model, aerial photographs and mudflat models, there are microscopy events and lectures for groups.

Neuwerk

From the beaches in Duhnen and Sahlenburg, you can discover the small island of Neuwerk about 10 kilometers away. With its 30 inhabitants, it is a popular destination for vacationers. You can reach the island comfortably by wadden car or on foot during a guided wadden hike. Since you can only reach the island or the mainland in one direction within one tide, please reserve a place on the "MS Flipper" of the shipping company Cassen Eils for the outward or return journey. www.neuwerkreisen.de

Nordic Walking

There are well-maintained walking trails for walking everywhere in Cuxhaven. In the beach areas and in the Wernerwald, we have signposted and measured special terrain cure and Nordic walking routes. The tours start at the signs at the Thallasozentrum ahoi!, Camping Wernerwald and Bojenbad Grimmerhörn. You can get your "Terrainkur- & Nordic-Walking training plan" on site at all tourist information offices or via the brochure mailing service.

Cycling

The dike is the only annoying incline that the vacationer has to overcome with his bicycle in Cuxhaven. Attractive, well-maintained bike paths stretch through heath landscapes, along the Elbe River and past small villages that have preserved their maritime flair to this day. The long-distance cycle routes "Weser-Radweg" and "Elbe-Radweg" begin and end at the Kugelbake on the dike. You can find tour suggestions in the Cuxland brochure "Cycling" or under the Cuxland tour planner.

Parking bicycles safely at Cuxhaven railway station

The reconstruction of Cuxhaven's railway station area is nearing completion: recently, the collective locking systems for bicycles were erected at the station. The so-called "bicycle cages" each offer space for 40 bicycles and in the facilities there are lockable luggage lockers with a power connection so that pedelec batteries can be securely charged with their own charger.

The collective locking systems will be released for use shortly. The electronic locking system will be installed in the next few days. In future, parking spaces and luggage lockers can be booked online. The booking is made via the portal www.bikeandridebox.de. A one-time registration on the website is required for use. Here, future users can find out about the booking process in advance and register.

There is a charge for the use of the facility, payment is made during the booking process. The following booking options are offered:

Pitch

1 day: 1 €
1 week: 3 €
1 month: 10 €
3 months: 20 €

Luggage compartment with charging facility (incl. power consumption)

1 day: 1 €
1 week: 2 €
1 month: 5 €
3 months: 10 €

As soon as pitches can be booked, the city of Cuxhaven will inform you and the location Cuxhaven will appear on www.bikeandridebox.de.

Riding

Horses have dominated the scene for centuries. It is certainly unique to discover the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea on horseback or to ride once to the offshore island of Neuwerk. A wonderful riding area can be found in the Cuxhaven coastal heaths and in the area of the Wernerwald. To ensure that the attractive network of bridle paths continues to be designed and maintained, please purchase a riding vignette before riding out. The vignettes are available at the tourist information offices and selected riding stables.

Beaches

Sand for digging, building castles or just feeling it under your bare feet - that's what the six kilometers of sandy beaches from Duhnen to Kugelbake and in Sahlenburg offer. All beaches are cleaned regularly, in summer even daily.
Green beaches with colorful beach chairs on well-kept lawns can be found in Grimmershörnbucht and Altenbruch. In Grimmershörnbucht, the red-and-white pavilions with catering offer ideal resting opportunities along the world shipping route. You can relax in a hammock in a maritime atmosphere and watch ships at Altenbruch lido with its small beach promenade, where the ships are within reach.
From the Kugelbake to Duhnen, the beach promenade with wave-shaped protrusions and numerous maritime seating options offers a fantastic view of the Wadden Sea and the ships on the North Sea. There are play facilities for little pirates; gastronomy right by the sea.

Strandbahn

Almost all year round the "Jan-Cux-Strandbahn" runs on the beach promenade between the "Alte Liebe" and the end of the beach in Duhn about every 2 hours. During the comfortable ride you get many explanations about the beach and the mudflats.

Beach entry fee

Beach regulations

Sandcastles, sunbathing and beach chairs - everyone has different interests, everyone wants the perfect holiday. To ensure that everyone gets along well and can enjoy their holiday to the fullest, there are the spa and beach rules. It lists some rules and recommendations that all Cuxhaven friends should take to heart.

Beach promenade

The new promenade in Döse and Duhnen has become bigger, more beautiful and wider, with uniform surfacing and shapes that mimic the crests of waves. Seating and rest areas allow guests an even more beautiful view of the sea, the World Shipping Route and the mudflat Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site and invite them to linger. Playgrounds for little pirates, dunes for protection from the wind and flying sand and, last but not least, the renewed sanitary facilities, showers and foot showers make the new promenade so attractive and offer beach fun for all. The beach and the Kugelbake can now also be reached barrier-free.
In Altenbruch, the approx. 300 m long promenade is virtually inviting for ship-spotting and is itself shaped like a ship. The ship's bow in the east and the ship's stern in the west provide an outer boundary, but at the same time serve as a viewing terrace and seating areas. In between, there is plenty of space to relax, walk and play. A new DLRG station with a boat container for the lifeboat and supply facilities for emergencies provide safety for guests during the main holiday season from 1 June to 15 September and can be reached barrier-free.

Surfing

Sahlenburg beach is considered an excellent surfing spot. There is a designated surfers' car park below the Marineturm, and equipment can be unloaded beforehand at the turning bollard. Steinmarner Strand and Grimmershörnbucht offer further surfing opportunities, although the latter is only recommended for advanced surfers.

Wadden Sea

EXPERIENCE UNESCO WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE LIVE!
Twice a day, the North Sea releases the seabed off Cuxhaven at low tide. The sea then retreats for kilometers. Here you can discover a fascinating animal and plant world. Along with the high mountains, the Wadden Sea is one of the last true natural landscapes in Central Europe.
Before you set out to explore, find out about the current mudflat hiking times and follow the instructions. The best way to discover the mudflats is on a guided mudflat hike. You can find an overview of the mudflat tours in the brochure "Mudflat Hiking in the World Natural Heritage".

Mudflat Sea Visitor Centre

In Sahlenburg, directly on the beach with a view of Neuwerk, the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site can be explored in an exhibition on more than 450 square meters. The topic of the Wadden Sea is presented here in a targeted manner for a wide variety of visitor groups - from kindergarten children to adults.

Further information under Wadden Sea National Park or at www.nationalpark-wattenmeer-cuxhaven.de

Guided tours of the tidal flats

Guided mudflat walks in the Cuxhaven mudflats are offered by the National Park Centre (Tel.: 04721 700 70 400). Mudflat walks to Neuwerk can be booked through the Cassen Eils shipping company (Tel.: 04721 667600). Further information, dates and individual mudflat hiking times in the brochure "Mudflat Hiking" and via the information hotline 0 4721 404200.

Mudflat car

Being driven across the seabed in a wadden car is almost a "must" for every holiday guest in Cuxhaven. Such an excursion lasts four hours and includes a one-hour stay on Neuwerk.
Further information: Nordseeheilbad Cuxhaven GmbH, Tel.: 04721 404200.

Mudflat hiking

Walking barefoot across the seabed is a very special pleasure that only the tides of the North Sea make possible. However, if you are surprised by the tide, your life is in danger. It is therefore imperative that you observe the following instructions: When the red signal ball at the rescue stations is raised, return to the beach at all costs. As a matter of principle, do not go on the mudflats in fog. The mudflat walking time in the Sahlenburg and Berensch-Arenscher mudflats begins and ends 20 minutes earlier than the stated Döser and Duhner mudflat walking times. Information in the brochure "Mudflat Hiking" and via the information hotline 0 47 21 / 404 200.

World shipping route

Around 60,000 ships pass by Cuxhaven on the world shipping route every year. From the "Alte Liebe", the big ships appear so close that you think you can touch them with an outstretched arm.

Weather / Climate

Low tide, high tide and wind bring rapid weather changes and leave little time for long-lasting rain. The island-like climate with its salty air and wind stimulates the circulation and improves general well-being. Getting blown away on a walk is just as much a part of a North Sea holiday as basking in the sun in a beach chair.

Motorhome pitches

Cuxhaven offers numerous pitches for holidaymakers with motorhomes.
Motorhome pitches are located

Additional pitches are offered by almost every campsite.
